Bulawayo man is Mr Ugly 2011

A BULAWAYO man upstaged nine others to win the Mr Ugly title at a weekend pageant.

Thirty-year-old Austin Mbewe won R1,200 and a blanket at the contest held last Saturday in the border town of Beitbridge.
"I feel honoured by this victory," Mbewe told the Herald newspaper after winning the title.

"I have been a subject of ridicule from society since childhood and the world has seen that there is a beautiful side to my ugliness."

The Herald said Mbewe was “undoubtedly the deserving winner”.

Organiser Lovemore Chonzi said: "Basically, the competition is meant for people to have fun and celebrate who they are, just like any other contest in the world."

The competition, which is in its third year, has the blessing of the National Arts Council and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

Fifteen men had been originally scheduled to participate, but six “developed cold feet at the eleventh hour”, Chonzi said.

The winner was chosen by a panel of female judges.

Two runners-up -- Kudakwashe Chiramba, 45, of Beitbridge and Chitova Chezhira, 39, of Masvingo -- won 600 rand and 500 rand respectively, and a blanket each.

A similar competition is being planned for the capital Harare on Monday.

'Magic penis' prophet arrested

Disclaimer: I am not sure of the exact source of this story but trust me, strange things happen in Zimbabwe all the time!

A Bulawayo's Nkulumane suburb prophet claims that he gets healing powers from his penis. The Prophet, Blessed Mvura's magic stick healing prowess has been going for the past few years and claims to have healed hundreds of desperate women of different illnesses.

Mvura's powers were temporarily brought to a grinding halt recently after a woman whom he had administered an ointment through sex started developing pimples on her private parts. Her husband accused her of promiscuity but the woman divulged the source of her illness and pointed the finger at the Prophet.

Questioned by the woman's husband, the prophet maintained his innocence and told the man that he had prior to the healing procedures told the woman about his unorthodox method and she consented. After escaping unscathed, Mvura went on with his errands. For the past few months, Mvura has taken his act to the border town of Beitbridge where hordes of women were also HEALED.

He returned to Bulawayo on Monday last week and found police officers waiting for him in connection with a rape case. he was subsequently arrested. Mvura appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Richard Ramaboea. The self professed penis prophet shocked the gallery after claiming that he wanted to heal the woman. Mvura went on to claim that he only heals women.

"I only use my organ when treating people. I rub it with a specific medicine for that particular disease and insert my penis into the woman's privates," he said.

Runyoka sex boy: Snake eating my privates

28/06/2010 00:00:00
by Lindie Whiz
http://www.newzimbabwe.com/news-2736-Runyoka+sex+boy+Snake+eats+privates/news.aspx

A BULAWAYO family has made a desperate plea for help after a 16-year-old boy claimed a SNAKE was entering his body through the foot and EATING his privates following sex with a married woman believed to be “locked” – a witchcraft practice common in parts of Zimbabwe.

The teenager from the Paddonhurst suburb told the Bulawayo Chronicle he met the woman – named as Sharon Manjoro -- at Bell Mine in Amaveni, Kwekwe.

The boy claims the woman -- believed to have a spell known as ulunyoka/runyoka cast on her by her husband to stop her from being intimate with other men -- paid him US$10 to have sex with her.

He tearfully told the Chronicle: “After we were intimate, the woman left Kwekwe and I believe she went to her husband in Gweru. Since then, I have not seen her.

“Soon after I was intimate with her, I felt some itching on my private parts and three days later, a strange snake emerged from nowhere and entered my body through my foot.

“When it reaches my private parts, it starts eating me and the pain I experience during that process is terrible.”

A man identified as the boy’s guardian said: “It is very terrible. The snake appears once everyday and can be seen as it moves in his leg until it reaches his private parts.

“When it reaches that area, it appears to be eating him and the boy starts crying out for help for about 30 minutes.”

The boy’s family say they were turned away by a hospital, and consultations with inyangas have failed to solve the mystery.

In a direct plea to the woman’s husband, the boy’s guardian said: “We are prepared to pay anything to Sharon’s husband because the boy’s life is in danger and we cannot afford to lose him.

“I am appealing to anyone who can treat this kind of ailment to come and help us. They may come to number 19 Dillon Road, Paddonhurst, in Bulawayo or call me on +263712745818 or +263712739879.

“We are desperately confused and asking anyone who can help us in this matter to come forward and help the boy.”

The Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association's Benson Kaseke said that although runyoka/ulunyoka is not approved by traditional healers, it is widespread in parts of Mashonaland.

Runyoka/ulunyoka is typically used by people who suspect their spouses of playing away from home, he explained. “No one wants to live with an unfaithful partner, hence the need for runyoka.”

One of the most common methods of administering runyoka/ulunyoka is to secretly spike a partner’s food, but there are more blatant methods. One in particular is known in Shona as “rwebanga,” or knife. A husband buys a new knife, sprinkles it with some traditional herbs, puts the open knife at the doorstep of his bedroom and then summons his wife into the room. The wife walks in and strides over the open knife and thereafter the husband asks her to pick it up and snap it shut before handing it back to him.

The husband then hides the knife in a place where it is unlikely to be found by anyone else. This is supposed to prevent the wife from indulging in extramarital sex. But if she does dare to have an affair, the adulterous pair risk the humiliation of being caught in the act by the husband, as they supposedly would be unable to uncouple themselves because of the power of the magic charm. “They can only be freed when the husband opens the knife,” says Kaseke.

Married women of the Tavara tribe, in the Mukumbura area of Mount Darwin, who have been enchanted in this way do not shake hands with men they are introduced to, for fear that the medicine would affect them. If a man does shake an enchanted woman’s hand, he is said to feel numb and weak and only regains his strength after the hand is withdrawn.

Kaseke says in some cases daughters are given runyoka by their parents so they cannot engage in premarital sex. To undo the enchantment, the girl is requested to take her boyfriend to her parents’ home where he is given the same medicine so he is not affected by it when they have sex.

Meet Zimbabwe's ugliest man

by Lindie Whiz

ELMAS Moses beams after being voted Zimbabwe’s UGLIEST man.
You would think that’s a turn-off for women. But the 43-year-old dad of ten is happily married to two women.
Winning smile ... Mr Ugly 2010 Elmas Moses

Moses, a traditional healer from Mberengwa, won Mr Ugly 2010 in Beitbridge last week Saturday – beating a strong field of 35 other men also convinced they were offensive to the sight.

After claiming his crown in the pageant supported by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Moses had a terrifying message for the beauty police: “If you think I’m ugly, wait until you see my four brothers.

“It’s a pity they couldn’t get here on time.”
Moses, who was the first runner-up last year to eventual winner, Peter Chikomakoma, added: “"I was disappointed when I came second last year, but this time I worked hard on my weaknesses.”

James James came second in the pageant, with Hilary Maunga third.
For his ugliness, Moses walked away with the first prize of R1,500 while his two runners up pocketed R750 and R500 respectively.

The pageant is the brainchild of Dominic Gwatirisa.
“Pageants are generally centred on women ... we want to shift that mindset and have fun with men from across the country,” Gwatisira said.

Next year regional finals are planned to cast the net wider for Zimbabwean men who are contrary to beauty.

Meet child mystery lesbian couple

By Lindie Whiz, www.newzimbabwe.com, Nov 5, 2009

A LESBIAN who claimed to have been impregnated by another woman has given birth to a child with a tooth, disparate arms and a crooked leg, reports said.

Fungai Manhiko, 21, has named her child, a boy, Fanwell Dube – the surname of her lesbian partner, Elnett.

Manhiko made headline news in Bulawayo when she claimed two months ago that she was expecting Dube’s baby.

The couple claimed that Dube grows a male sexual organ when they are together between the sheets, but which disappears after being intimate.

And Dube claims to have no recollection of her sex trysts with Manhiko “as she would be in a trance” which she believes “is a result of mystical powers that bedevil her family”, the Sunday News reported.

Fiercely conservative residents of Bulawayo’s Sizinda suburb – where Manhiko lived until her flight to her rural Masvingo last week – have been gripped by the couple’s bizarre story.

Two weeks ago, Manhiko delivered a healthy baby boy but was stunned to discover the tot had a single tooth, uneven arms and a warped leg.

A local inyanga (traditional healer), Thulani Sibanda, told the Sunday News: “It is possible the ancestors gave the couple the baby to punish them for violating the rules of nature.

“It is taboo for women to sleep together … I can assure you that that tooth is just the beginning of their problems.”

A newly-born baby with a tooth is a rare phenomenon. The tooth usually falls out days after birth, as happened to the lesbian couple’s child.

Medical experts have dismissed Manhiko’s claims that Dube could be the “father” of her child as nonsense.

And challenged by the Sunday News to take a DNA test, Manhiko stormed: “Why should we go for a DNA test? When your parents gave birth to you, did they go for tests? Obviously they did not because your father knew without doubt that you were his seed.

“It’s the same with Elnett, she knows that the baby is hers, in fact, the baby looks like her, he has her eyes and nose. If Elnett and her relatives want a DNA, they are welcome but they will be disappointed with the results.”

The two women are both unemployed, and Manhiko said she feared for the child’s well-being.

“I have no access to good food. A breast-feeding mother needs to eat well, without enough food there is trouble. It’s not healthy for me and the baby. I am not concerned about myself but the baby. He might grow up succumbing to diseases as a result of the impoverished state I am in,” she said, just hours before leaving Bulawayo for rural Masvingo.

Men locked donkeys in hut for 20 days

By Lindie Whiz, www.newzimbabwe.com, 10/16/2009

POLICE have arrested a man and are looking for another after two donkeys were stolen and locked up in a HUT for 20 days.

Sifelani Mnkandla, 19, appeared before a Tsholotsho magistrate on Wednesday charged with stock theft. His alleged accomplice, Skiri Ndlovu, is on the run.

The two men may yet learn that the law is not an ASS. If convicted, they could be jailed for between nine and 25 years under Zimbabwe's harsh anti-stock theft laws.

Prosecuting, Joshua Muguti told Tsholotsho magistrate Toendepi Zhou that on September 10 this year, Finish Ndlovu’s two male donkeys worth US$400 were grazing in the Manyenge area of Sipepa – some 130km north-west of Bulawayo.

Mkandla, in the company of Skiri Ndlovu, the prosecutor alleged, rounded up the donkeys and herded them to Skiri’s homestead where they penned them in one of the huts.

The donkeys stayed locked in the hut, without water and food, until October 1 when a member of the local Neighbourhood Watch Committee was alerted.

Enot Nkungu Ndlovu freed the donkeys and managed to apprehend Mnkandla, but Skiri escaped.

Goat gives birth to 'human-like creature'

By Lindie Whiz, www.newzimbabwe.com, 02.09.2009

THE provincial governor of Zimbabwe’s Midlands Province said “an adult human being was responsible” after a goat gave birth to a “human-like creature” on Sunday.

Governor Jason Machaya led a delegation of police officers and journalists to the Maboleni area in Lower Gweru, under Chief Sogwala, to see the “creature” which died within hours.

“The head belongs to a man while the body is that of a goat,” Governor Machaya told the Chronicle newspaper.

Machaya said he believed a local man had “lost self control” and had sex with the goat.

“This incident is very shocking. It is my first time to see such an evil thing,” the governor said. “It is really embarrassing. It’s self-evident that an adult human being was responsible. Evil powers caused this person to lose self control.”

The Chronicle said “the creature had a human head, face, nose, shoulders and human-like skin that had very scanty furs. It had goat features from the ‘shoulders’ to the legs.”

Its “sagging stomach”, the paper said, “prevented curious villagers from determining whether it had human or animal sex organs as it protruded covering the front part.”

“Villagers said the end product was so scary that even dogs were afraid to move close to the goat,” the paper’s Midlands correspondent wrote after a trip to Maboleni with the governor.

A villager, Themba Moyo, said the “creature” was “a miracle that has never been witnessed anywhere”.

The goat’s owner, a Mr Nyoni, said he called the police and village elders after his shock find.

Nyoni has 15 goats and says the animal that gave birth to the bizarre creature “is the mother of most of my herd”.

“It’s the first time that my goat has done this. My goats often give birth to sets of twins,” he added.

Chief Sogwala has summoned villagers to a meeting, and fears the incident is a “bad omen”.

The chief advised Nyoni to seek the help of a sangoma “in search of answers to this bizarre incident”.

Govenor Machaya said it was a “disgrace that a man can stoop so low opting for animal company in a world full of women.”

He added: “We often hear cases of human beings who commit bestiality but this is the first time for such an act to produce a product with human features.”

The governor said he would lead a campaign for harsh sentences for people who abuse animals.

He added: “Our people should be taught that such acts are bad, they are evil. God created men differently from animals. As men, we have women who really love us. They even outnumber us by more than 52 percent I think.

“It is my prayer that whoever did this should be punished severely, if caught, so that we discourage others who may think of committing similar crimes.”

Baboon detained in police cells

From Mwakazvida Chaonwa, Chipinge Correspondent

THERE was drama at Nyanyadzi Police Station recently, when police were left with no option, but to detain a man together with his baboon pet, after the animal had caused pandemonium at the police station.

Chipinge District police spokesman, Assistant Inspector Takaidzwa Chitombi, confirmed the incident and said Moses Dube was arrested and detained together with his baboon, which he nurtured and moved around with.

He said Dube was arrested at Nyanyadzi Business Centre for contravening Section 46 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (being excessively drunk).

"He was with his baboon, named Jimmy, when he was arrested. The baboon followed him to the police station. He was locked in the police holding cells and the baboon was left outside. The police thought that it would go away, but to their surprise, the baboon caused pandemonium, making irritating noise wanting to be re-united with its master.

"Police had no option, but to detain Dube and his baboon. Soon after the two were re-united, the baboon stopped making noise," he said.

Ass Insp Chitombi said when Dube was asked how he had tamed the baboon, he said the baboon came to his home when it was still young, probably after it lost its mother.
He said: "Dube said he took care of it and has been staying with the baboon for one-year-and-two months. He even said the two were now inseparable."

Ass Insp Chitombi said Dube was asked to pay a fine and was released. He said they were still to contact the Department of Wildlife and National Parks on the way forward regarding Dube and Jimmy.

Zimbabwe furore over loincloths

By Steve Vickers

BBC News, Harare

Twin Zimbabwean brothers arrested for wearing loincloths have agreed to end their shocking campaign for traditional dress and wear shirts and shorts.

Tafadzwanashe and Tapiwanashe Fichani were charged with indecent exposure after walking around in goatskin kilts, which left their buttocks exposed.

They spent two weeks in prison, where their mental states were evaluated.

The much-publicised case has reignited the debate over traditional versus western dress in Zimbabwe.

The brothers were arrested while wearing the nhembe loincloths on their daily walk to a shopping centre near their home in an upmarket suburb of the capital, Harare.

'Mentally colonised'

Since their release, their father has been shielding them from the media.

But prior to their arrest, the 22-year-olds said that they had received a calling from God to give up their western clothing when they were living in the UK.

If human nature developed from apes, so there's development in life
Man in Harare
They had spent two years studying there, but left after Tafadzwanashe was arrested on fraud allegations and deported.

The brothers said that those who look down on them for their decision were "mentally colonised", as they were just going back to how things were before Europeans arrived in Africa.

The twins also shunned chairs and beds and sat and slept only on the floor.

'Disgraceful'

They have reignited a debate about the place of traditional dress, but not many people in the capital are on their side.

"What they did is very disgraceful, especially to the parents," one man said.

"If human nature developed from apes, so there's development in life. So they should appreciate the development of clothes," he added.

Another woman said she thought their move was "stupid".

"I think we're advanced. We can't wear those things," she said.

After their stay in prison, the public prosecutor says that it was concluded that they are not mentally disturbed.

However, they were only allowed out on free bail after agreeing to wear everyday clothes.

They left prison wearing shirts and shorts, seemingly having lost their battle, but having caught the attention of the nation.

Zimbabwe's ‘Doctor Love’ Paul Matavire dies

ONE of Zimbabwe’s finest musicians to emerge after the country gained independence from its former colonial master, Britain in 1980, Paul Matavire aka Dr Love has died. The vibrant musician whose limit was the sky died at the age 44 on Thursday night at his farm in Rutenga, Masvingo.

A family member in Harare who preferred not to be named confirmed the death of the blind singer whose deep lyrics earned him the nickname ‘Dr Love."

Matavire became blind after suffering from glaucoma as a child. Glaucoma is increased pressure in the eyeball that causes blindness.

“He has had been unwell for sometime, but of late he was feeling better and it really came as a shock to hear that he had died. He is said to have died at his farm in Rutenga,” the relative said. She said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course although it was expected he would be buried at his farm along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.

Matavire rose to prominence in the 1980s when he joined the Jairos Jiri Band based in Bulawayo at Jairos Jiri Rehabilitation Centre.

The band played jit and rhumba music and recorded most of its songs with Gramma Records and ZMC.

A spokesperson at Gramma, Silvanos Mutizwa, said he learnt of Matavire’s death over the radio.

“We have been robbed of a gentleman whom we worked with amicably for a long time,” said Mutizwa.

An administrator with the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMRA), Mary Jaure said the country had been robbed of a talented performer who did a lot to uplift the arts industry. “He was one of the pioneer members of ZIMRA and everybody knows that he was such a talented artist. It is a great loss to the country,” said Jaure. Matavire, who at the time of his death had more than 13 albums under his belt, would be remembered for his songs that were rich in social commentary.

His last project released in 2004, Zimbe remoto, was a duet with South African mega star, Freddy Gwala.

During the peak of his musical career, Matavire toured the world and produced hit songs like Dhindindi Full Time, Chapuka Ndipe Mwenje, MaU, KwaChiundura and Nhamo Yeusavi that made him.

However, their success was interrupted by Matavire’s one-year incarceration on rape charges. The band commemorated his 1991 release with the song Back from College, which chronicled his experiences in jail.

A beneficiary of the land reform programme, Matavire was now more into farming. He was reported to be seriously ill from an undisclosed ailment last month and was admitted at a private clinic in Masvingo from February 11 to February 15.

Zimbabweans make condom bangles

In Zimbabwe, enterprising traders are making money by turning female condoms into brightly-coloured bangles. The rubber rings are removed from the condoms and made into fashion items. Although it is profitable for the vendors, those involved in the distribution of the heavily-subsidised condoms want to end the practice.

One shopper in central Harare said: "They're pretty. I used to wear them until I discovered they were made from condoms. Then I threw them away."

Alfred, who also sells watches, batteries and necklaces, sells a packet of three bangles for Z$10,000 (US$2).

"We get them for free from hospitals and clinics. Then we cut the plastic off, just leaving the band, which we repaint in bright colours - pink, yellow, red."

The government makes condoms available free of charge at health centres throughout the country as part of the fight against HIV/ Aids.

An estimated 25% of adult Zimbabweans are HIV positive.

Zimbabwe is one of the leading users of female condoms in southern Africa, using almost one million every year.

Concerned

Aid agency Population Services International (PSI) distributes subsidised female condoms to pharmacies and hair salons, where they cost around two US cents each.

PSI's Yasmin Madan says the female condoms are more expensive to make than male condoms and so there is pressure from donors to ensure they are used properly.

"When we hear such stories, we do get concerned and we act straight away," she said.

The business of turning female condoms into fashion accessories may die down soon, but whatever the rights and wrongs, it certainly shows that Zimbabweans are creative and resourceful people.

Zimbabwe discovers female athlete is a man

IN one of the biggest scandals to rock Zimbabwean sport, a male athlete,
Samukeliso Sithole, masqueraded as a female and represented the country
in international events raking in millions of dollars.

The discovery of the deception has left authorities baffled.

Sithole's female friend has since filed crimen injuria charges against
the top Zimbabwe and Lancashire Steel Athletics Club runner after she
undressed in his full view being under the impression that he was a
woman like her.

The athlete was immediately arrested by Mbizo police on being found out
following which he was arraigned before Kwekwe magistrate Mrs
Siphathimisiwe Makuvaza on February 4 on two counts of crimen injuria
and impersonation.

The State, led by Mr Tapfumaneyi Michael Nkonde, will allege that on
January 14 2005, Sithole of 175 Lancashire Steel Compound, dressed as a
woman, befriended Ms Melita Mudondiro of 124/9 Mbizo in Kwekwe.

It is further alleged that on the same day, Sithole visited Ms Mudondiro
at her residence.

When he entered the house, Ms Mudondiro was in a state of nudity or
semi-nudity, but was not moved or alarmed by Sithole's presence as her
"new friend" had led her to believe that he was female.

On January 15 2005, the accused purporting to be a female, went back to
Ms Mudondiro's Mbizo house again in a female attire. The complainant
undressed in the presence of the accused and then went to bath.

All along she was under the impression that Sithole was a woman because
of his feminine features and dressing.

The complainant returned from the bathroom wrapped in a towel and
entered her bedroom where the accused was seated. She unwrapped herself
and remained naked in full view of the accused.

She later dressed up in the presence of the complainant and they were
later joined by three friends - Chipo Nyoni, Violet Chinyere and Comfort
Chigayo.

The State alleges that the five "friends" left Ms Mudondiro's house for
the railway station where they intended to board a train to Bulawayo to
attend an athletics meeting in the city.

On arrival at the station, the five friends were met by a Mr Mkandla,
who informed the women that their "friend" Sithole was not female, but
was actually a man.

On hearing this, the accused, like the athlete he is, took to his heels,
but was chased and caught by Mr Mkandla, who handed him over to the
police.

He was taken to Kwekwe General Hospital where a doctor who examined him
confirmed that he was indeed a man.

The State will also allege that Sithole impaired the dignity of a female
friend.

He was remanded to March 3 for trial.

Prosecutor Mr Nkonde said the court had found it difficult in deciding
whether to remand Sithole in custody in male or female cells as he was
adamant that he was a woman yet the doctor's report had revealed he was
a man.

In his defence, Sithole told the court that he was born with both female
and male organs. The athlete added that his parents then consulted a
Chipinge traditional healer who gave them some herbs following which he
assumed female status.

However, Sithole further alleges that they only paid half the money
charged for the services rendered by the healer. As a punishment by the
traditional healer for them to pay up the outstanding bill, the male
organ only developed recently, he said.

He told the court that he was scheduled to settle the bill with the
traditional on his trial day and this would have resulted in him
reverting to the female gender.

The top Zimbabwean athlete told the court that he had a boyfriend.

Sithole is a successful athlete and has in the past few years amassed a
lot of wealth and bought several undeveloped stands and properties in
Kwekwe, according to court officials.

He also bought several beasts with his earnings from athletics.

Sithole competed in international events as a female. The athlete, who
is multi-talented, competed in triple jump, javelin, shot-putt and
running grabbing gold and silver medals.

The athlete's latest escapade was when he took part in the Southern
Region Championships in Botswana in June and won the only gold medal for
Zimbabwe.

Dubbed a field events specialist by Radio Mauritius, he scooped five
medals at the youth championship in that country last year.

Court officials said they had never come across such a case before.

The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, which, as the governing
body of the sporting discipline, sanctioned Sithole's trips, said they
were still investigating the matter.

At home, Sithole made history last year when he scooped five gold medals
and a bronze in long jump, shot-putt, javelin, high jump and 400m
hurdles at provincial youth championships in Masvingo competing as a
female.

Sithole, a product of rural athletics, was brought to Kwekwe after he
was identified in Silobela.

Lion eats livestock, farmers eat lion

From correspondents in Harare
November 29, 2004

VILLAGERS took revenge on a lion that killed their livestock by barbecuing and eating it, Zimbabwe's state-owned Sunday Mail newspaper says.

"It ate our animals, so it is only fair that we eat it too," a villager said. The paper said some believed they would get lion-like bravery and strength from the meat.

The lion - part of a pride that terrorised the Zimbabwean village for more than six months - was shot dead by parks authorities.
